As the world celebrated World Water Day on March 22, Webster Athens spotlighted a timely reflection by Vice Rector of Academic Affairs, Dr. Susie Michailidis, exploring humanity’s deep and enduring connection to water — from ancient Greek philosophy to modern psychological research.

In her piece titled “Water Allure” Professor Michailidis delves into how water has inspired philosophers, shaped civilizations and continues to impact human behavior and emotional well-being.

“Whether it is the sea, a lake, a river or a city fountain, humans have always been magnetically pulled to water,” writes Dr. Michailidis. “From Thales of Miletus, who believed water was the essence of all matter, to the hydraulic innovations of Minoan and Classical Greek societies, water has been central not only to survival, but to how we understand the world.”

The article emphasizes that water’s influence goes beyond utility. Scientific studies now confirm that natural and urban water environments can enhance mood, reduce stress and even improve cognitive function, revealing a psychological and evolutionary bond that has endured for millennia.

Dr. Michailidis also weaves in cultural insights, quoting author Rebecca Solnit’s poetic description of the color blue — the light that “got lost” in the depths of water — to underline the emotional and aesthetic pull that aquatic landscapes exert on the human imagination.

“Webster Athens is uniquely positioned at the crossroads of ancient heritage and modern global education,” said Dr. Michailidis. “Being surrounded by the Aegean Sea reminds us daily of water’s vital role in our history, identity and future.”

This reflection is part of Webster Athens’ ongoing commitment to cultural scholarship and interdisciplinary exploration, bridging classical wisdom with contemporary global challenges.

Webster Athens in partnership with EMAAS (Euro-Mediterranean Academy of Arts and Sciences) took part in organization and papers presentation in three International Forums on Water (2019 ,2021, 2024). This activity indicated a very powerful point concentrating on the key human aspects of the time of serious societal trials, water pollution, technological innovation and the need for cooperation between different agencies. While investigating concerns of water issues, these forums illuminated important ideas to provide a greater understanding of what is involved in the requests for necessary solutions.

Dr. Michailidis concluded, “Webster Athens participation in the academic activity is important for learning, research, discovery and creativity. These are fundamentals to the mission of a university. The progression of knowledge (discovery, innovation, creation) is essential to any educational institution.”
